The United Nations designated June 20, 2001 as the first annual World Refugee Day, acknowledging fifty years of responses to the 1951 UN Convention on the Status of Refugees. World Refugee Day commemorates the strength, courage, resilience and contributions of refugees throughout the world. It is a time when we focus on the incredible achievements of refugees who have become our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and countrymen – and it’s also a day when we consider the causes of their forced migration, the millions who are still persecuted and displaced without safety and protection, and the need for a world response to refugees’ plight.
