International Rescue Committee
Nutrition and Food Security
Since 2010, the IRC’s Nutrition and Food Security Program (NFSP) has developed services and infrastructure aimed at engaging low-income families in urban agriculture, nutrition education, and healthy food access navigation. The NFSP is uniquely designed and equipped to assist refugees to achieve five IRC core outcomes that are critical to their integration into their new homes. We believe in: food as a vehicle for positive change, holistic health and wellness, a culture of learning, community-based collaboration, cultivating long-term relationships, and the knowledge and power of our clients. All refugees and asylees within five years from date of arrival (refugees) or grant of asylum who live in Tucson, regardless of resettlement agency. For more information contact Katrina Martinez, 520-319-2128 x106, Katrina.Martinez@rescue.org
New Roots
In Tucson, New Roots connects refugees and asylees interested in growing some of their own food to community gardens near them and provides regular training and technical assistance to ensure that they have the tools and knowledge needed to grow successfully in our unique Tucson climate. The gardens also provide a community gathering space where growers can make friends, pass on their cultural heritage, and learn new skills. Growers interested in income generation receive support and technical assistance through the New Roots Micro-Producer Academy (MPA) to improve their business skills and access to markets. Graduates of the MPA Academy now sell their produce through the Abundant Harvest Cooperative at the Santa Cruz River Farmer’s Market and to Pivot Produce, a local foods aggregator business that sells to local restaurants and runs a direct-to-consumer weekly produce share. The Tucson New Roots program also supports new refugee and asylee arrivals to the US in navigating the US food system through grocery store orientations and in-home nutrition education. For more information, contact Julia Munson, 520-319-2128 x113, Julia.Munson@rescue.org

The Arizona Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides nutrition education and breastfeeding support services, supplemental nutritious foods and referrals to health and social services. WIC serves pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women; infants; and children under the age of five who are determined to be at nutritional risk. The information flyer below is available in Arabic, Burmese, Chinese (Simplified), Kinyarwanda, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, and Vietnamese.
You can use the screen for eligibility website to see if you qualify for Nutrition Assistance; however, the best way to know if you are eligible is to submit an application for benefits and go through the application process. The application process includes verifying that we have received complete and accurate information along with an interview conducted by our staff. For more information, see the How to Apply for Cash, Medical, and Nutrition Assistance Video.
Able-bodied adults without dependents are only eligible for a few months of Nutrition Assistance unless they are exempt, working, or participating in the SNA E&T program.
If you do not qualify for Nutrition Assistance benefits, or need help with food during the application process, please contact The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). Persons receiving Nutrition Assistance automatically qualify for TEFAP.
Whether you are applying for the first time, or renewing your benefits, you may need one or more of the following pieces of information to complete your application:
Submitting your application and required documentation starts the application process. The following are ways that you can apply:
You will need to complete an eligibility interview via phone or in person at one of our offices. We strongly recommend that you have income information, ID, Social Security numbers, and Citizenship verification at the interview. During your interview, we will review your information in order to see if you qualify for the program.
At the end of your interview, we will let you know if we need any additional information to decide your case. We will also send you a letter asking for this information.
